Rome, an intoxicating mix of haunting sights, awesome art and scintillating street life, Italy’s Eternal City is one of the world’s most enchanting and inspirational capitals, a city awash with priceless treasures, ancient statues, renaissance frescoes and sculptures crafted by amongst others, Michelangelo. Its icons of antiquity, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, and the Pantheon, are relics of Roman domination. Many of Rome’s marvels are not in museums, but right on the streets for all to see. Officially, Rome’s history dates back to 753 BC, in reality it goes back much further!

The only city in the world that contains an independent country: the Vatican City. Indeed at the fall of the Roman empire in 476 AD, the papacy assumed control of Rome, a control that the Popes exercised until 1871, ten years after the formation of the Kingdom of Italy. The capital was then relocated from Florence to Rome.

Rome continues to be a timeless, living museum, but it also contrives to combine this with being a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital crammed full of culture, quality restaurants and bars. Whilst this could describe a multitude of other countries capital cities, the Italians do it as only the Italians can, with style and panache, lapping up the Latin La Dolce Vita lifestyle!

Golf in Rome is not exactly a new sport as the Rome Aquasanta Golf Club dates back to 1889, but like Vesuvius, golf in Rome had lain dormant for many years and there would be very few reasons to drag you away from the historic sights and its heady, atmospheric aura if it was not for the outstanding quality of its golf courses. Marco Simone, just selected to host the 2022 Ryder Cup, is a Jim Fazio course boasting magnificent views of Saint Peter’s Dome and Rome’s skyline in the distance. Olgiata which has hosted the World Cup of Golf not once, but twice, not forgetting hosting the Italian Open. Castelgandolfo, now there’s a name to get your tongue twisting, is built in an extinct volcanic crater, designed by the Master, Robert Trent Jones Snr, a classic course not to be missed!

Due to the heroic exploits of the Molinari brothers, Costantino Rocca and Matteo Manassero, the eruption of golf in Italy has finally begun. Don’t leave it too long before joining these…
