GIVE A LITTLE WHISTLE!

Amazing, awesome, spectacular, sensational, Tecina Golf, a place of superlatives for which the list could be never ending!

Given that there is hardly a flat piece of terrain anywhere on the island of La Gomera, the renowned golf course architect, Donald Steel, could have been forgiven if he had said “Forget it” and walked away when confronted with 135 acres of mountainside on which he was being asked to design a championship golf course. Steel gave free rein to his imagination and creativity, making superb use of the topography and contours and it is a testament to his design capabilities that not only did he creat a course on a mountain that doesn’t test your lung power to its limits, but he crafted a layout that is both challenging, majestically beautiful and fun to play.

How to design a course that isn’t a “mountain goat track” was Steel’s conundrum. The fact that the site was formally a banana plantation provided the solution as Steel  utilized the plantation terracing as his inspiration for the routing of the holes. Uniquely, the 1st tee is at the furthest point away from the clubhouse (reached by shuttle bus or buggy), the holes then tumble down the mountainside slalom style, zig sagging until reaching the clubhouse 500 feet below!

Stupendous vistas abound, with the Mount Tiede volcano dominating the horizon and spectacular views of the glistening ocean from every hole, a claim that not many other courses in the world can match. Add to this an astounding array of flora, fruit trees (Mangos, Banana and Avocados) Aloe Vera, Agave, Jacaranda, Bougainvillea and Rubber Plants combining to illuminate the course with a kaleidoscope of colour, the perfect canvas for exceptional golf.

The fairways are generous in width and shots have to be seriously offline to be lost. However, don’t be fooled, an out of position tee shot will invariably leave golfers needing to execute an exceptional approach to finish within a regulation two putt distance to the pin. The course is no pushover as recognised by the European Challenge Tour who have played events at Tecina for 7 consecutive years.

Tecina touts a tremendous trio of signature holes, 4th, 10th and 12th; most courses normally only boast one. The 4th is a picture postcard par 3, played considerably downhill over a ravine, any shot leaked to the left will be a lost cause. Framed against the sensational backdrop of the azure Atlantic, this is a tee shot that will have you scrambling for your camera!

The second signature hole arrives at the 10th and if you thought that the vista from the 4th hole was breathtaking, the view from the elevated 10th tee is simply jaw-dropping! Played down to a plateau fairway the temptation to grip it and rip it is irresistible, but beware you can run out of fairway as the hole is traversed by a cactus filled Barranca. The second shot is again played down to a severely contoured green, seemingly perched out into the ocean. Bliss!

Lastly, the 12th, a delightful downhill dogleg right with a large bunker to be avoided on the apex of the dogleg, followed by an even more severe incline down to a cunningly contoured green with borrows that will bamboozle the best. I won’t mention the views, you know that they are there!

The adjective “stunning” is much overused, but quite frankly, the views on Tecina are such, that it is the most apt description and they just keep coming! Every hole is a photo opportunity in waiting and you can seriously end up taking more shots with your camera than with your clubs!

The inhabitants of La Gomera have a unique mode of communication by whistling, El Silbo, if you hear this shrill sound, duck quickly, it might mean FORE!

A round at Tecina is a magical experience that will live long in your memory, just don’t forget to...
